At Wendover Place, we start everyone in a half hour private lesson. Students arrive about 25 minutes ahead of their scheduled lesson time to learn how to halter the horse or pony they may ride and groom him/her. Students will be taught how to use the curry comb, body brush, hoofpick, and mane and tail brush.  After grooming, students then learn how to “tack up” where they put on the saddle, bridle and martingale and adjust the girth and then the stirrups.  If the student has never ridden before he/she begins on the longe line which is a thirty foot rope that they circle the instructor learning their basic seat and leg position without having to worry about steering. They learn to walk, posting trot, sitting trot, two point, halt and back up before steering is introduced. Students will go back on the longe line to canter and at times will have refresher courses as they progress.

More advanced students will sometimes return to the longe line and work without stirrups, no reins, and even their eyes shut. All of this develops a sense of balance and oneness with the horse.  If you just want to learn how to ride- excellent! We teach the same movements upto about third level dressage, so if advanced flat work is what you wish, you will have it. If jumping is your goal, we will help you achieve it! We do not require students to show but if that is your dream and the idea of competition is for you, you have come to the right place. Wendover riders have won classes from local shows to National finals!!!  After the lesson, students will cool out the horse and depending on the time of year may groom the horse or wash it down. The student will learn how to rinse off the horse, wash the face, and sweat scrape. We always re-clean the horse’s hooves and tidy them up before putting them and their equipment away.

So lessons are a half hour ride time but usually set aside about an hour and a half for learning and fun!!!
